Netflix recently released the series 13 Reasons Why based on the popular young adult novel of the same name by Jay Asher. The series depicts the story of a high school student who dies by suicide, leaving behind 13 cassette recordings that share the events that she perceives led to her death. Series like this one can lead to misconceptions and misinformation about suicide, and possibly to the glorification of suicide.
For these reasons, mental health professionals, including the Waterloo Region District School Board’s mental health team, feel it is necessary to make you aware of this series. The WRDSB is providing the following tips, distributed by School Mental Health (SMH) ASSIST and National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), to help with conversations you may have with your child:

PowerLifting Performs Well in Recent Competition

Congratulations to the W-O Powerlifters on their fantastic results in a Regional competition held at Sir John A. MacDonald Secondary School on April 22, 2017. Great work by all! A special shout out to Erik Bender on winning his weight class (qualifying him for Provincials) and also winning best overall male lifter of the competition. Best of luck to Erik at the provincial meet on May 25 at Westdale High School in Hamilton.

WODSS Communications Technology and TV Studio Broadcasting students visited TSN in Toronto for a tour of the facility on April 20. Students enjoyed the experience and Bell Media indicated they would welcome W-O students to visit anytime!

Grade 9 Drama Classes Host Guest Artists

W-O Grade nine Drama classes have been fortunate to host guest artists the week of April 24 as they explore Indigenous Canadian culture and the history of residential schools in their current unit of study.
