Baden, ON – October 1, 2021 – The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), Waterloo-Oxford District Secondary School and the Township of Wilmot are pleased to invite the public, students, and alumni to celebrate the grand opening of Wilmot’s beautiful new Artificial Turf Field and Track on Thursday, October 7, 2021.
This project has been a joint financial venture by both the WRDSB and the Township through capital planning and has been in the works for many years. It will serve the students of Waterloo-Oxford as well as the residents of the Township for football, soccer, field hockey, rugby and track & field. The project was designed by BJC Architects and constructed by 39 Seven Ltd.
To celebrate the official opening of the field, you are invited to join us at 5 pm to purchase a meal from local food trucks and stay for children’s sports skills activities on the field between 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.
At 5:30 p.m the opening ceremonies will commence with dignitary comments, an official ribbon cutting and singing of O Canada by the Waterloo-Oxford school choir. Concurrently the Wilmot District Soccer Association will be playing the first official soccer game on the new field. Following the soccer game, Waterloo-Oxford will host the first official football game commencing at 7:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to enjoy the full evening of activities.
During the event, an official fundraising program will kick-off to support the purchase of a digital score clock and bleachers for the sports field. Families are also invited to walk the track, and have the option to make their walk a donation lap. Additionally, there will be an option to donate directly to the project.
“I know I speak for all of the staff and students at W-O when I say we can’t wait for the first kickoff on our new field,” said Carolyn Salonen, Principal of Waterloo-Oxford District Secondary School. “Thank you to everyone whose hard work and dedication made this a reality. Our students and our community will enjoy this incredible field for years to come.”
“Seeing this project come to fruition has brought such a sense of accomplishment for all of those involved,” said Oliver Wandelt, Project Coordinator with the WRDSB. “This has truly been a collaborative effort, and everyone on this team put in countless hours to help bring this resource to the students and community members of W-O and Wilmot.”
“This is a very exciting day,” states Acting Township CAO Sandy Jackson. “To see this beautiful facility, located within the Township, is an amazing accomplishment for this community. I look forward to seeing it filled with sports activity in the coming years. Thank you to the WRDSB for this special collaboration with the Township.”
