A.  General English Literature Directories

Each of the following directories has extensive links to different topics.

• Voice of the Shuttle -- a searchable directory maintained by Alan Liu, English Dept., Univ. of California.
• Literary Index  provides both an overview and a review of the more significant collections of Internet literary resources of interest to scholars, students, and lovers of literature.

• The English Server: aka ...Literature Resources for the High School and College Student the page is maintained by Michael Lee Groves.
• Bibliomania - Bibliomania has thousands of e-books, poems, articles, short stories and plays. The complete plays of Shakespeare are featured, as well as major titles from Austen, Dickens, Twain, Freud, Benjamin Franklin, Vatsyayana, and a host of others.
• Short Stories - These are complete texts in the categories of fiction, science fiction and fantasy, horror, romance, humour, non-fiction, crime, and children. They include many classics, but this site also solicits and posts new stories (subject to editing and reformatting). Browse by category or search by keyword.

Online Literary Criticism Collection -- Links the user to over 1,000 critical and biographical Web sites on literary criticism dealing with American and British literature from pre-1500 to the twentieth century.

Books section on Salon.com -- Salon is one of the best on-line magazines.

The Boston Globe book reviews -This online version of the print review journal features the same fiction, poetry, essays, and interviews dedicated to "the highest achievements in contemporary writing."

Bookmarks Magazine's book reviews section.

BookWire - Most comprehensive book industry site on the Web. Includes Library Journal; School Library Journal; Publishers Weekly, with their Bestseller Lists and links to reviews.

New York Times Book Reviews - 50,000 book reviews by title or author. You need to sign up to use this site.

Boston Review - Progressive bimonthly journal of culture and politics. It features critical essays, movie and book reviews and articles on politics as well as original short fiction and poetry.

Chapter One - Collection of more than 500 first chapters of popular fiction and non-fiction, added to every week. Includes some reviews. Searchable and browsable.

• Project Bartleby from Columbia University, contains some poetry collections
• Academy of American Poets - The site features, under: Find a Poet - a searchable index of more than 200 poets, with biographies, photos, poems, and some sound files.
• Haiku Salon (Shiki) - Just about everything you need in order to learn about, write, and exchange haiku (Japan's 17-syllable poetic form.)
• Sonnet Central - Created as a labour of love, for poetry lovers, this extensive collection of English language sonnets can be approached from different points: an alphabetical list of authors, by time period for sonnets from Great Britain, and by geographical area for everywhere else - including nineteenth and twentieth century American.

Theatre History -- a good site for theatre around the world.
